Traditional ways of measuring organizational performance provide a picture of what has happened to the organization. However, this approach has become less reliable about providing a view of how the organization will perform into the future. In today’s highly complex, changing and uncertain world, an organization requires new types of measures – key predictors of performance that take into account the strategic objectives of the organization and the environment in which it operates.
Given increasing stakeholder scrutiny of organizational decisions and actions, these measures of future performance also need to be reliable and transparent. Furthermore, the measures need to be supported through a comprehensive methodology that is consistent at all levels throughout the organization. This enables the organization to leverage knowledge and learning gained from applying the measures.
In essence, a comprehensive solution is required for continuous performance improvement, based on reliable measures of the drivers of and threats to the organization’s future performance.
